SWEATYS GET ACTIVE AND GIVE BACK AWARD NOMINEE

WHO: Matt Gorham, 23, from Massachusetts

WHAT: Matt and his committee raised $550 for Playworks Massachusetts through a Rock, Paper Scissors FUNdraiser.

HOW: We brought together over 200 guests to support Playworks and the upcoming Girl’s Basketball League. Every person that came to the event was asked to donate $30, to help support a scholarship for one girl during the 2015 Girls Basketball League. The event ended with a larger Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament.

BEST PART ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE: Matt says, “Seeing all of my friends and family members come out to support the event. We had a full room that was filled with energy and passion for the youth of Boston. It was great to see the young professional community come together for an amazing cause in the community.”

TOUGHEST PART WAS: “Securing donations for the raffle and silent auction. Getting a donation was difficult and required a lot of solicitations and follow up. However, we were able to get a lot of great donations.”

ONE NUGGET OF ADVICE FOR OTHER MOVERS & SHAKERS: “When throwing a fundraiser for a great non-profit, really lean on your co-workers, friends and family to come to the event. It helps increase numbers and spread the word about the cause you are supporting.”

MY CHARITY FIRES ME UP BECAUSE: “Playworks gives children in Boston and surrounding cities the opportunity to play at recess and stay physically active throughout the school day. Some things that I was given everyday during school, students in Boston do not have. I am happy to be involved with this worthy cause.”

HOW WAS THE DOUBLE DOLLAR DEAL HELPFUL?: It gave a lot of people attending the event the incentive to donate more money during the silent auction and raffle because they knew Positive Tracks would double their dollars – giving even more girls the opportunity to play basketball.
